Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1) Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
I was really surprised by this book. I expected to love it – but it was only ok. The story was good, but not fantastic. My major problem was with the writing. The pacing was off, the tone felt amateurish and the characters just did not feel true to me.

Disclaimer: I read this because I started watching the show “True Blood” on HBO last summer and quickly became addicted. I thought that the show actually handled the story much better. This is strange coming from me, as I try to always read books along with their filmed adaptations and almost always find the books much more detailed and engrossing. This was the entire opposite. The characters on the show seem much more fleshed out (pun intended – vampires, haha). The show was also much better paced and gave more depth to many of the minor characters. Each of the deaths in the show really affected me – especially the one – while in the book I found myself not caring.

In the end, I will probably read more of the books just because I enjoy the overall story, but I will wait until after the next season is over to avoid any spoilers. I would recommend anyone looking to read this series to start with the HBO series – and that is the first time I have ever suggested starting with a filmed version over a book.
